Ethically-Sourced Coffees

coffee beanBrazil BSCA Espresso 1 (500g pack)
The Brazil Speciality Coffee Association is perhaps the only grower organisation in the world which certifies not only the members (under social, environmental and process criteria - see www.bsca.com.br/dloads/bsca_regulations_01_02_2005.pdf) but also the coffee itself.
Only a handful - about 50 - of Brazil's finest farms are able to meet the exacting conditions of membership. With each new crop the BSCA creates a blend which is custom-made specifically for espresso - and which we're pleased to offer.

coffee beanEthiopian Yirgacheffe (500g pack)
ORGANIC CERTIFIED. Grown in the mountainous area of Oromia at over 2000 metres and giving a floral acidity with the muscat-like undertones of Darjeeling and a noticeably smooth and lingering aftertaste. This coffee sits uniquely between the Asian and American coffees and is a favourite at Green Coffee.
The Oromia Coffee Farmers Union brings together the interests of 74 affiliated co-ops in the region. The coffee is allowed to bypass the auction system and 75% of profits is returned as a dividend to members. (www.oromiacoffeeunion.com)

coffee beanIndian Monsoon Malabar AA (425g pack)
"Monsooned" coffees are stored in open warehouses to allow the moist monsoon air to circulate around the bags. The beans absorb moisture and swell and the colour changes to pale yellow/straw colour. They are then dried again.
This processing produces a unique flavour which is particularly popular in Norway and Sweden. There is a mushroomy note set within a full-bodied complex of flavours and gives a caramel finish. We recommend that you try it in a home-made blend as a balance to the Central/South American coffees: can be tricky to roast.

coffee beanPapua New Guinea Grade A (500g pack)
Produced by the Highland Organic Agriculture Co-op (HOAC) and described by their shipper as "having a chocolate nutty flavour with a slightly fruity finish".
The HOAC supports about 12,000 people in the mountainous Eastern Highlands. Access is difficult and the high cost of transport means that the higher prices achieved for organic coffee through the co-op are essential for a viable return. (www.coffeeconnections.biz)

coffee beanSumatra Mandheling (500g pack)
Spicy and full-bodied, this coffee typifies the nature of coffees from Asia and the Pacific.
We can’t provide much information on the sourcing of this coffee because of the structure of the Indonesian coffee industry but our shipper is working to develop a closer relationship with the exporters and we are keen to help provide the market to support that development.

coffee beanKenya AA Ruthagati (500g pack)

The Rutuma Farmers Cooperative is a group of 1000 small scale farmers in the foothills of Mt. Kenya. In order to improve the quality, market access and sustainability of their coffee they have put the Ruthagati factory through UTZ responsible coffee production certification ( Click here for more info ) .

Wet processed and sun dried, this is a fine example of typical Kenyan citrus acidity and blackcurrant and fruity notes. It is a distinctive profile which, alone, probably works best in a cafetiere and which we really like in a blend with one of the sweeter Central Americans.
